Indian Hockey player found dead

Jyoti Gupta, a 20-year-old hockey player who represented the women’s national team was found dead on the railway tracks in Haryana’s Rewari.

Police believe she committed suicide, going by the account of the driver of the Chandigarh-Jaipur Intercity Express, who reported that she had “suddenly appeared” before the train when it was crossing the Jhajjar Road overbridge, near Rewari station, around 8.30pm.

The driver called Government Railway Police (GRP), which found the hockey player’s body at the spot.

Jyoti had last spoken to her family, which is based in Sonepat, around 7 pm on Wednesday to tell them she was getting late because her bus had stopped. Around 10.30pm, when her mother called on her phone, it was a GRP official who received it and informed her of her daughter’s death.

Jyoti, a striker, had attended a three-month-long national coaching camp at Himachal Pradesh’s Shilaroo in June ahead of last month’s World Hockey League Semifinals in Johannesburg and was due to join another camp later in August.
