Kalan Kerala Curry Recipe

Kalan is a traditional Kerala dish made during Onam Sadhya. It is a curry dish prepared using buttermilk, mustard seeds, coconut and raw bananas.

Ingredients needed:

  • 3 cups of thick butter milk
  • 2 cups of yam and raw bananas – cut into thin slices
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp powdered fenugreek powder
  • ½ cup grated coconut – grind with 2 green chilies
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • ¼ tsb mustard seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • few curry leaves

Recipe

  1. Take a deep non-stick utensil and pour the buttermilk in it. Place it on the stove on low flame. To this, add 1 tsb of turmeric powder, Yam and Banana slices. Cook until soft
  2. Add salt, grated paste of coconut to it and cook for few minutes.
  3. Take a small pan, heat the coconut oil. Add mustard seeds and curry leaves to it and stir for a few minutes
  4. Add this to the buttermilk mixture. Also add black pepper and fenugreek seeds. Mix well.

This dish is ready to be served. Garnish with Mustard seeds and curry leaves.
