Water scarcity in Trivandrum to be tackled soon

Despite being the monsoon season, several areas in Kerala are facing severe water shortage. A meeting of the District Development Committee held at on Saturday decided to take steps to alleviate drinking water scarcity in view of a looming crisis. Neyyantinkara MLA K. Ansalan, who was the first to table the issue said that water would be supplied in tankers to areas in Neyyatinkara that faced severe water shortage.

The Thiruvananthapuram city draws water from Aruvikkara Dam, where the water levels have not reached alarmingly low levels. However, the summer could carry bad news. The meeting also discussed methods of recharging water resources.  The ponds in Attingal constituency would be revitalized and made use of as per the demands of B. Sathyan, MLA, said the officials concerned.

Minor Irrigation officials said that estimates had been prepared and works would be taken as soon as funds were available, to a question from V. Joy, MLA, on the cleaning up and building of protection walls for public ponds in the Varkala constituency.

The Water Authority Executive Engineer said the issues in water distribution in Kallara area had been solved and that contract had already been given for the extension of the Pullambara water distribution network. He was responding to a question on the same from D.K. Murali, MLA.

Officials said the Kerala Irrigation Development Corporation had been entrusted with preparation of the design of the regulator in the Vamanapuram river, to a question from A. Sampath, MP. Officials of the Roads division of the Public Works Department said maintenance work on roads would be taken up after Onam, following the completion of piping works. The committee gave instructions to officials to take steps for the disposal of electronic waste.

A detailed report has to be submitted by each office on the clean-up campaign taken up under the Freedom from Waste campaign of the State government.
