Mammootty aka Muhammed Kutty Panapparambil, the megastar of Mollywood turns 66 today. 

The megastar is surely a huge inspiration for every youngster who dreams of cinema. Mammootty is one of those actors who made a special place in the industry without any godfathers. He astonished the industry with his growth from a non-actor to one of the finest actors that Indian cinema has ever seen.

Here we present the 15 iconic performances by the great actor. Have a look:  

Chathiyan Chanthu (Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha)

Mammootty stunned the audiences with his mind-blowing performance as the historical character Chathiyan Chanthu. He succeeded in changing the image of the character which was portrayed as a villain in the earlier movies, with his brilliant acting skills.

Balan Mash (Thaniyavarthanam)

The actor stole the show as Balan Mash, a school teacher whom the family and friends suspected to be a mental patient. His performance in the film, especially in the climax sequence earned rave reviews.

Achootty (Amaram)

Mammootty’s portrayal of Achootty, an uneducated fisherman, who aims to make his daughter as an IAS officer, completely conquered the minds of the audience. The character is considered as a masterpiece of Mammootty and a classic father role of Malayalam cinema.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar

Mammootty played Dr. B R Ambedkar, Father of Indian Constitution, in the movie. The movie was made in English language. He earned National recognition and won his third National Award trophy for his performance in the movie.

Vidyadharan (Bhoothakkannadi)

Mammootty played Vidyadharan, a clocksmith who fell mentally ill due to his incapability to face hard realities of life. Undoubtedly one of the best performances by the actor.

Mada (Ponthan Mada)

It was another stepping stone of Mammootty’s career. He played Mada, a lower-caste worker and the movie revolves around Mada’s relationship with his colonial landlord, played by Nasseruddin Shaw.

Vaikom Muhammed Basheer (Mathilukal)

Mammootty made a mark with his performance as Basheer, the writer who falls in love with a lady voice he hears from the women’s jail during the period of imprisonment. It is considered as one of the best performances by the actor till date.

Devarajan (Thalapathy)

Mammootty played Devarajan, a golden-hearted don, which was an adaption of epic character Duryodhana, in the movie directed by Mani Ratnam. He even managed to overshadow his co-star, superstar Rajinikanth with his exceptional screen presence.

G Krishnamurthy (New Delhi)

Mammootty was just brilliant as G Krishnamurthy aka GK, a revenge-driven journalist. The Joshiy movie marked the grand comeback of the actor, who was going through a bad phase in his career.

Bhaskara Patelar (Vidheyan)

Bhaskara Patelar is still considered as one of the all time best performances witnessed by Malayalam cinema. Mammootty scored with his exceptional portrayal of Patelar, an aggressive, cruel landlord who kills his wife and rapes his slaves.

Joseph Alex IAS (The King)

Mammootty delivered a thunderous performance as the young, brave IAS officer, Joseph Alex Thevallipparambil in Shaji Kailas-Renji Panicker team’s The King. It is one of the most powerful characters played by the megastar.

Cherammal Francis (Pranchiyettan and the Saint)

Mammootty once again proved his brilliant language skills, with his portrayal of Cherammal Francis aka Pranchiyettan, a Thrissur-based businessman. One of the best performances by the actor in the past decade.

Mike Philipose (Loudspeaker)

Mammootty won the hearts with his touching portrayal of Mike Philipose, an illiterate farm labourer who visits Ernakulam city, to donate his kidney. One of the most-underrated performances by the megastar.

Murikkum Kunnathu Ahmed Haji, Haridas Ahmed and Khalid Ahmed (Paleri Manikyam)

Mammootty played three different roles; Murikkum Kunnathu Ahmed Haji, his son Khalid Ahmed, and illegitimate son Haridas Ahmed in Ranjith’s Paleri Manikyam. He portrayed the three extremely different roles with equal brilliance and proved that he can be versatile too.

CK Raghavan (Munnariyippu)

Mammootty was revolutionary as the mysterious, silent, intelligent ex-prisoner CK Raghavan, in Venu’s Munnariyippu. Undoubtedly the best performance by the megastar in the past 5 years.

The actor was born as the eldest son of Ismail Panapparambil and Fathima on September 7, 1951 in Chempu, a small village in Kottayam district of Kerala. He has two younger brothers and three younger sisters.

Despite being from a traditional Muslim family with no movie background, Mammootty was deeply passionate about Cinema since his young age. He decided to try his luck at films, after completing LLB from Ernakulam Govt. Law College. But, Mammootty was rejected by most of the film-makers, who pointed out his looks and voice as the major minus points, which is ironical today. Later, he completed the Law Graduation and started practising as an advocate at Manjeri Court.

He made his lead role debut with Devalokam in 1979; but got the major breakthrough in his career with the antagonist role in Vilkkanundu Swapnangal. He has won 3 National Film Awards for the Best Actor, 5 Kerala State Film Awards, 13 Filmfare Awards, 11 Kerala Film Critics Awards and 5 Asianet Film Awards. Mammootty was also honoured with the fourth highest civilian award of the country, Padma Shri in 1998. He was conferred with the Doctor of Letters degree by University of Calicut and University of Kerala in 2010.
