Fly over collapsed in Bhubaneswar, issue politicized

An under construction fly over collapsed in Bhubaneswar’s Bomikhal area today afternoon. Two people are feared dead and at least five are reportedly trapped under debris. The deceased has been identified as Satya Patnaik (40) of Jharpada. His daughter, Sheetal, who was also injured has been shifted to AIIMS. The 10 injured are also treated at city’s Capital Hospital.

Rescue teams with cranes and fire brigades were rushed to the spot. Around 30 labourers were working when the flyover collapsed at around 12.45 pm.

“Two senior engineers have been asked to visit the spot and conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident. Action will be taken against those who found guilty,” said Works Secretary Nalinikant Pradhan.

The sudden collapse is being blamed on poor construction while political leaders are pointing fingers at Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik to take responsibility for the situation.

“We have been complaining about the sub-standard work of the flyover. Even we had submitted memorandum to the chief minister through his work secretary Nalinikanta Pradhan. The chief minister who is the works minister never took our complaint seriously. Instead, he allowed the contractor and the public works department to change the original drawing of the flyover for inflating the project cost. This is a huge scam and needs to be investigated by CBI,”  said Sameer Mohanty, vice-president, BJP, Odisha.

Congress leader Suresh Kumar Routray also alleged a deliberate negligence in order to “escalate the project cost for political funding”.
