Boat capsizes in river Yamuna: Many drowned

At least 22 people drowned after their boat capsized in Yamuna river in Baghpat district on Thursday, the police said.

The boat carrying 60 people capsized and 22 persons drowned, District Magistrate Bhawani Singh said.

After the incident, the villagers resort to violence on Delhi-Saharanpur highway.

Rescue teams, including a team of NDRF, have reached the spot, a senior police officer said.

About 12 people have been rescued.

The overcrowded boat was headed for Haryana when the incident occurred.

The NDRF team has been mobilised to Katha village.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased.

The cause behind the incident was not known immediately.
