After a controversial landmark judgment by the supreme court banning the sale of firecrackers in Delhi, the traders of firecrackers in today moved the Supreme Court to seek permission to sell their stock.
A bench headed by Justice A K Sikri had announced its verdict on a plea seeking restoration of the apex court’s last year order banning the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR.
The impact of the ban spread like the proverbial wildfire through wholesale markets, uniting shopkeepers big and small in their anger and dismay.
Almost 85 percent of all crackers sold in the country are manufactured by fireworks manufacturers in the tiny Tamil Nadu town, and the SC’s decision came as a shock to the manufacturers and wholesalers; they fear that other states may adopt the same measures, thus causing significant losses to their business.
The main qualm with the SC’s decision is the fact that the firecracker retailers and manufacturers were not given any time for a review; Diwali starts in just 8 days.
The top court, through its November 11 order last year, had suspended all licenses which “permit sale of fireworks, wholesale and retail within the territory of NCR”.
