Lightning damages 700-yr-old Muslim shrine…

Lightning during heavy showers damages one of the oldest Muslim shrines in Srinagar.

The ‘Khanqah-e-Moula’ , was partially damaged in a midnight blaze after being struck by Lightning on Tuesday night.

The mosque of the revered Islamic cleric Hazrat Amir-e-Kabeer Mir Syed Ali Hamadani — which is more than 700 years old — saw thousands of visitors on Wednesday morning, including chief minister Mehbooba Mufti who had come to assess the extent of damage suffered by the structure.

Mehbooba went around the shrine complex, interacted with the members of the management committee and the devotees, and ordered a detailed report from the local administration about the fire. The CM said that the structure symbolizes the pluralistic ethos of Kashmiris, from which every citizen draws spiritual solace. She also thanked the local youths who had helped to prevent the fire from spreading.

Residents demanded the installation of CCTV cameras in the complex, availability of fire tenders in the locality, scientific protection measures for the wooden structures within the mosque and expedition of the shrine expansion plan.

Police are investigating the fire. Firefighters had doused the flames on Tuesday night before the blaze could cause any major damage to the structure, cops said.

The highly revered mosque was built in memory of the renowned Muslim cleric, scholar and preacher Mir Syed Ali Hamadani .

The cleric had arrived in Kashmir in the late 1300s, more than 700 years ago, and contributed a great deal in spreading Islam and its mode of life in the Valley. The shrine was originally a place where he used to give speeches to the people of Kashmir. It was later converted into a mosque by the residents, according to historians.
