BJP marked their winning 99 seats in the 182-member Assembly and a 49.1 percent vote share. The Congress won 80 seats, including the two won by its ally Bharatiya Tribal Party and Jignesh Mevani’s seat. The BJP has entered towards victory though with a minimum margin. Nearly 30 constituencies that the BJP won in 2012 tipped over towards the Congress in 2017.

Congress has certainly delivered its best-ever performance since 1990. During the last Gujarat elections in 2012, then Chief Minister Narendra Modi had made strong use of social media in his winning campaign against the Congress. For Rahul Gandhi, who strategised for and led from the front the Congress charge, the results are cause for satisfaction and introspection. The issues he raised fetched him resonance which translated to unprecedented acceptance of his leadership.
