Second highest seizure: Indian national arrested with 1.25 crore foreign currencies

In the second highest seizure this year at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs Department seized foreign currencies worth Rs 1.25 crore from an Indian national, who was departing for Hong Kong on a Jet Airways flight in the early hours of Wednesday.

Identified as Mohamed Faraaz Upletawala, the passenger was intercepted on suspicion when he was about to board Jet Airways flight 9W76 for Hong Kong. A search of his baggage, consisting of two trolley bags and one laptop bag, revealed assorted foreign currencies.

The seized currency comprised of 2,00,000 US Dollars, 1260 Hong Kong Dollars, and 730 Chinese Yuan, which totaled to a value of Rs 1.25 crore. When his statement was recorded, Upletawala admitted possession, carriage, and recovery of the currencies seized. He was arrested and further investigation is on, said an AIU official.
