These companies are set to launch 5G Smartphones by 2019

5G: It’s the next (fifth) generation of cellular technology which promises to greatly enhance the speed, coverage and responsiveness of wireless networks. How fast are we talking about? Think 10 to 100 times speedier than your typical cellular connection, and even faster than anything you can get with a physical fiber-optic cable going into your house. (You’ll be able to download a season’s worth of “Stranger Things” in seconds.)

It’s not just about supercharging your phone’s connection to the network either; 5G is seen as the underlying technology allowing self-driving cars to talk to each other, or for people to wirelessly stream super high-definition virtual reality content into their headsets. In other words, it’s going to be huge.

As the technology is still in developmental phase, chipset maker Qualcomm has announced a major partnership with smartphone companies such as Asus, HMD Global (which sells Nokia phones), LG, Sony Mobile, Sharp, Xiaomi and ZTE among others. These companies will be using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem suite to launch 5G-enabled smartphones in 2019.

“Qualcomm Technologies continues to be a mobile industry leader with its 5G mobile chipset products and 5G ecosystem collaborations in support of aiming to deliver commercial 5G NR mobile devices in 2019,” said Qualcomm in a press release.

“The arrival of 5G will expand mobile into new spectrum bands and all spectrum types, allowing for enhanced mobile broadband and increasing the overall average download speeds for virtually all smartphone users.”

Companies like Asus, Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Connected Technologies Limited, HMD Global – the home of Nokia phones, HTC, Inseego/Novatel Wireless, LG, NetComm Wireless, NETGEAR, OPPO, Sharp Corporation, Sierra Wireless, Sony Mobile, Telit, vivo, Wingtech, WNC, Xiaomi and ZTE are working with Qualcomm on this technology.
