Aadhaar as prove for drivers’ application; government

If you thought that interval messages and notifications to link your Aadhaar with your banks and mobile was coming to a stop, then you thought wrong.

The draft notification to amend the rules for driving licenses proposes Aadhaar as one of the documents that can be submitted for address and age proof, Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written statement to the Rajya Sabha on Friday. It said the notification to amend the license application form had been submitted to the Law Ministry for vetting.

“As per information received from Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Aadhaar card has been incorporated as one of the options in the list of documents to be submitted by the applicant as proof of address and age,” Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written statement to the Rajya Sabha.

“However, if an applicant does not have an Aadhaar card, there is a provision for submission of other alternative documents like passport, birth certificate, Life insurance policy etc,” Mr. Prasad said.

He added that there have been instances of concerns being raised on the security of Aadhaar data.

“All the concerns raised regarding the security, have been dealt with and addressed by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Adequate legal, organizational and technological measures are in place for the security of the data stored with UIDAI,” Mr. Prasad said.

He added that biometric information, including iris scan and fingerprints, is securely stored in an encrypted form at UIDAI’s Central Identities Data Repository.

SIMULTANEOUSLY

The government is planning to make linking of driving licenses with Aadhaar number mandatory to check fake licenses. A software for this covering all states on a real-time basis is under preparation.

These details have been placed before the Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta on Wednesday; was informed about it by a court-appointed committee on road safety headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice K S Radhakrishnan.

This comes a day after UIDAI cautioned the public against going for plastic or laminated Aadhaar smart cards saying their unauthorized printing could render the QR code dysfunctional or even expose personal data without an individual’s informed consent. Currently, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra is currently hearing a clutch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar scheme and the enabling 2016 law.
