The Journey Of Bollywood Queen- Sridevi

Sridevi Kapoor born on 13 August 1963 in her father’s hometown of Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, India. Her mother named Rajeswari Yanger.She has a sister named Srilatha and a stepbrother named Satish. Her dad passed away during the year 1991, while her mom died during 1997.

She was an Indian film actress and producer who has starred in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada films. She was regarded as the first female “superstar” of India. She started her career at a very early age in 1967 as a child artiste in a Tamil movie ‘Kandhan Karunai’. She also starred as a child actress in a Telugu movie ‘Bangarakka’ in 1977, and in a Malayalam movie ‘Kumara Sambhavan’ in 1969.

Sridevi was renowned for her naturalistic acting abilities, her comic timing, and her graceful dancing skills. She was among the few female stars in Hindi cinema who could steer a movie’s commercial fate on her own merit.

Sridevi’s first appearance in a Hindi movie was in Julie (1975), starring the southern star Lakshmi as the titular Anglo-Indian heroine. Sridevi played Julie’s younger sister, Irene. In 1976, she got her first leading role in K Balachander’s Moondru Mudichu, which inaugurated a fruitful phase with the director and her co-stars Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.

The collaboration between Sridevi, Kamal Haasan, and Rajinikanth produced some of Tamil cinema’s best-loved films. These include Gaayathri (1977), in which Rajinikanth once again plays the cruel husband to Sridevi’s virtuous wife, Kaavikuyil (1977) and Priya (1978). In 16 Vayathinile, also starring Haasan and Rajinikanth, she plays a jilted woman who stands up for her beliefs.

The Sridevi-Haasan chemistry enlivened the popular classics Sigappu Rojakkal (1978), featuring Haasan as a serial killer and Sridevi as his wife, Varumayin Niram Sivappu (1980), in which she is the sympathetic lover of Haasan’s unemployed graduate, the vigilante-themed blockbuster Guru (1980) and Meendum Kokila (1981), where she plays a dutiful wife who wins back her husband who is infatuated with an actress.

She has also appeared in the TV series ‘Malini Iyer’, judged a TV show ‘Kaboom’ as well as appeared in numerous print and TV ads. She is also on the Board of Directors of the Asian Academy of Film & Television.

Sridevi went on to get married to her co-star, Anil Kapoor’s older brother, Boney, on June 2, 1996. They are now parents of two daughters: Jhanvi and Khushi.

In 2012, Sridevi returned to films after a 15-year-long hiatus with English Vinglish. In 2013, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor. She was also voted ‘India’s Greatest Actress in 100 Years’ in a CNN-IBN national poll conducted in 2013 on the occasion of the centenary of Indian cinema.

Sridevi has won five Filmfare Awards and has been nominated ten times.Sridevi was awarded a Padma Shri in 2013. She won numerous awards for her performances over her lifetime.

Sridevi made her debut as a fashion model in 2008. The actress modelled clothes for designers Priya and Chintan at the Lakme Fashion Week. The next year, she displayed the work of jewelry designer Queenie Dhodhy at the HDIL India Couture Week. She worked at Lakme Fashion Week again in 2010, and at Delhi Couture Week 2012, showing clothes designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

She has also appeared on the cover of several fashion magazines. In 2007, she was featured on the cover of Hi Blitz with the tagline “The Goddess Returns”. In 2011, she featured on the cover of Marie Claire, and in 2012, she was on the cover of L’Officiel. In 2013, Sridevi appeared on the cover of Vogue.

Sridevi received the ‘Ultimate Diva’ award at the Ciroc Filmfare Glamour & Style Awards in 2015.

Sridevi died on 24 February 2018 in Dubai after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. She was with her husband Boney Kapoor and daughter Khushi at her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding function in Dubai at the time of her death. Among the rumors of news of her death as an internet hoax, it was confirmed to be true by her brother-in-law Sanjay Kapoor.

She was last seen in 2017 film MOM. Her daughter Janhvi is set to make her Bollywood debut this year with Karan Johar’s directorial Dhadak.

The fans and well-wishers of Sridevi across the globe are still in disbelief about the tragic news. A great loss to Bollywood.
