This Kali temple on an island will transcend you

Kalijai Temple is situated on an island in Chilika lake. It is dedicated to the Goddess ‘Kalijai’. The place abounds with tales of Kali and how the goddess has influenced the life of the loclas.The legend of the Kalijai temple is the story of a boatwreck. A newly married girl named Jaai was crossing the lake in a ferry and met with an accident. The extremely violent Odisha coast very often have such incidents of cyclones and the boat got caught in it. In the mishap, every single person died, but the girl was found nowhere. After this incident she became the local Goddess and is worshipped as a part of Kali, the popular Hindu Godess.

It will take 45 minutes to cross the water and reach Kalijai temple. Nobody stays at Kalijai temple. At nights the boat connectivity is not quite there. On the way to the temple you can see INS Chilika firing range and training camp at your right side.The left side has an island populated with birds. Other islands like Parikuda, Maluda are also visible from this distance. One of the highlights of this place is the Gala fair that happens every yer at the time of Makar Sankranthi festival.

This place and its legend may not have pan india reach, but when you stand here you do feel the sense of holiness and a mystic feel embracing you. The experience will transcend you.
