The incident which made Kerala stoop in shame caused in Malappuram on April 18 when a 60-year-old man molested a 10-year-old girl with the consent of her mother inside a
cinema theatre at Edappal. The theatre management sent the CCTV visuals in which kankunnath Moydheenkutty(60), a native of Thruthala and a business magnate, was seen having reciprocated sexual behaviour with a lady and molesting her 10 year old daughter
. The theatre management informed the ChildLine workers with the video on April
25. Subsequently, the childline workers informed Changaramkulam Police but it was not taken by them seriously despite the law giving prime importance to POCSO(Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences) cases. That’s when the Childline workers decided to contact the media. The police and government jumped into action after the media took up the issue. The same vigour which they had shown in the murder of Latvian tourist in Kovalam. That case also involved initial negligence by the police and later jumping into action after the media reports and fear by the ruling LDF that it might affect them politically.

Moydheenkutty and the lady have been booked under POCSO and he is charged with
sections 6 and 7 of the POCSO act which ensures not less than ten years which may
extend to imprisonment for life, and fine (Section 6) and not less than three years
which may extend to five years(section 7).As the investigation team has got the info that the kid has been subjected to rigorous molestation they are thinking about putting the more serious sections 4 and 5 of POCSO act.Kerala Women’s Commission chaiperson also has strongly come against the police and called on the theatre owner and congratulated. The kid has been shifted to Nirbhaya shelter home.Changaramkulam S.I.K.J.baby was suspended pending an enquiry by Thrissur Range I.G. M.K.Ajith Kumar. The negligent S.I. has also been charged under POCSO.
Health and Social Welfare Minister K.K.Shailaja though condemned the laxity of police, she belittled the issue by stating it as an isolated one. There have been media reports about the convict’s high level political connections especially with the CPI(M) leaders which may have enabled the police to go easy at such a heinious crime. The theatre officials had not noticed the incident on the day of happening as they were busy with a fuction in another complex. But they did not let go of the incident fearing reputation at once they noticed the shameful act. Its the bold and commonwealth move by this theatre owners that helped the society to isolate the culprit. The theatre owners showed commitment to the people but what about the ruling front and the police? Can the people of Kerala believe in the recent arrest of Moydheen and the lady? Because we have seen how strongly CPM has recommended for the release of a sadist wealthy criminal Nisham and the political criminal Kodi Suni Scott free by getting Governor’s consent. Governor returned that recommendation and so that criminals enjoy in jail under the canopy of Kerala Police.
