The wait to seal a place in the IPL playoffs more or less ended for Chennai Super Kings at the MCA Stadium here on Sunday evening. The MS Dhoni-led side scored a comfortable eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad to register their 8th win of the season, and with 16 points they have almost secured their place in the top-4.
The architects of CSK win were Ambati Rayudu (100 n.o, 7×4, 7×6) and Shane Watson (57, 5×4, 3×6) with the bat and Deepak Chahar (4-0-16-1) with the ball.
Chasing a target of 180, the two-time former champions got the flying start that they wanted. A thick cloud cover over the ground greeted Watson and Ambati as they walked in for the chase, but their shot-making and running between the wickets were crystal clear.
Two successive sixes by Watson off Sandeep Sharma (1-36) – over fine-leg and mid-wicket regions respectively – in the third over of the chase signalled the side’s intentions. The two matched each other shot for shot. They were severe on any loose deliveries and chose to run those singles and doubles whenever the opportunity presented.
After this win, CSK has edged a step closer to IPL 2018 playoffs with 16 points, while SRH, who have already qualified for the IPL 2018, remained at the top with 18 points.
The top order CSK batsmen denied the most effective bowling attack of the tournament as they reached the target without much trouble. Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson struck magnificent centuries to help their team post a competitive total.
