US diplomats fall ill : Fear of mystery weapon in China

After US consulate staffs fell ill after hearing a mysterious sound, a US health alert was issued for China on the rumored fear of sonic weapon attack which had been reported from Cuba two years ago.

Doctors at a Chinese consulate in the southern city of Guangzhou examined the staffs who fell ill after hearing strange sounds and also several others were evacuated to the US and at least one had been diagnosed with brain trauma.

The new incident echoed the Cuban incident when 24 US Diplomats had been evacuated from Cuba since 2016, due to a baffling medical enigma when the diplomats started falling ill hearing some noises.

A diplomatical conundrum has been created as to how to respond to a suspected enemy attack in the Chinese soil.

According to a New York Times report US officials had privately raised questions on a possible Russian or Chinese hands behind this. Anyhow Washington is acting carefully without implicating Bejing which has announced an investigation into the incident.

Bonnie Glaser, a China expert at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington opined that until the US was certain of the cause, it seemed premature to make accusations. “I don’t think the US is calling it an ‘attack’.”, he said. This cautious response by the US is in stark contrast to their lashing out at Havana for failing to protect its diplomats in 2016. Accusing Cuba without any strong evidence on that issue, Washington expelled 15 Cuban diplomats arguing that the authoritarian state must have either carried out the assaults or knew the perpetrators.

The US’s diplomatic silence in the current issue is mainly because now at the opposite side is a rising superpower China, not impoverished Havana. Any accusations or lashing outs may cause chinks in US-China relationship.

The trade war discussions are under the Damocles’s sword and Bejing will not cooperate with the mission to denuclearise North Korea if America created any untoward incidents.
