Fine up to Rs 10,000 by the municipal body for the use of plastic bags: Mumbai

Using a plastic bag, you can be fined up to Rs 10,000 by the municipal body from June 23, in Mumbai. This is a positive step to curb the plastic pollution that has been rampant in the city and has caused the ecological disturbance of marine life on its coastlines.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mumbai’s civic body this ban very seriously. The Corporation has listed of inspectors responsible for effectively enforcing the ban. The supervisors will keep an eye on the consumers and traders across the city and fine them if they are found carrying plastic bags or are accepting the same from a vendor. The market department will inspect markets and malls.

The license department will supervise streets, local vendors and hawkers who primarily use the plastic polythene bags frequently to disburse good and things. The establishment department of supervisors will keep an eye on shops across the city. There are 225 BMC inspectors who are authorised to fine citizens and vendors. However, they will have to show their ID card and letter of authorisation issued by BMC before fining citizens.

Nidhi Chaudhari, deputy municipal commissioner in-charge of markets and the license departments told: “Right away, the BMC will begin to fine shopkeepers for handing out plastic items, and citizens who take them.”BMC believes it has given enough time for citizens of Mumbai to get used to this new change. The civic body allotted three months so that people got comfortable with using paper and cloth bags in place of plastic bags.

Maharashtra government initially informed citizens on March 23 about its plan to ban plastic use in the area in order to switch to environment-friendly means. Since March 23, BMC was authorized to fine residents of the city for using plastic but from June 23 the ban will be strictly enforced.
