Today’s Google Doodle honours Indian scientist and statistician Prasantha Chandra Mahalanobis on his 125th birthday with a doodle artwork. Other than being a celebrated scientist, Mahalanobis was also a member of the first Planning Commission of India and a co-founder of the Indian Statistical Institute.
Designed by Nishant Choksi, the doodle celebrates the work of the scientist born on 29 June 1893 in West Bengal. The doodle has been created to explain his pioneering work the ‘Mahalanobis distance’, a method of measurement used in population studies.

The noted scientist was born in a reformist family. His grandfather served as the treasurer and president of Brahmo Samaj. He studied at Brahmo Boys school in Calcutta and later Presidency College. He would also study at the University of London. He went on to establish the Pramatha Nath Banerji, Nikhil Ranjan Sen and Sir RN Mukherji.
His major contribution is to conducting surveys, while he introduced the concept of pilot surveys. He also acquainted people with the system of sampling. He just introduced a method for estimation of crop yields using statistical sampling.
The scientist breathed his last on June 28, 1972, just a day ahead of his 79th birthday. At that time, he was also the honorary statistical advisor to the government of India.
