Anganwadi Food Packets With Beef and Pork Mentioned as Contents Found

Food packets distributed at anganwadi centres led to public outrage in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar when it was noticed that the fine print on them mentioned the use of pork and beef, said media reports. These were the supplementary nutrition food packets which are distributed on a monthly basis among malnourished children and women.

Officials said that the packets distributed by anganwadi workers last week were sealed and contained items like oats, soya bean etc. This comes just days after tourism minister Satpal Maharaj was forced to issue a clarification following rumours of meat being served in state guest houses on Char Dham route.

The matter was reported to the women and child department in the district, following which a probe was ordered to find out how the packets found their way into the anganwadis in villages of eastern Rajasthan. The packets of British firm Waitrose were found in at least 10 centres.

Dr Lalit Vyas, Ayurvedic medical officer at Nagar CHC, who was part of the inspection team that checked food, said when they asked an anganwadi worker about it, she claimed to not know anything about it as the labelling was in English.

“I have reported the issue to higher officials for further action since this could spark a communal crisis,” said Dr Vyas.
