EASY & TASTY SIDE DISH

Tomato chutney or thokku is a popular recipe of South Indian cuisine. Once the tomato season is on with ripe tomatoes abundant and cheap at market, my mom prepares this delicious thakkali thokku at home. It is one of the delicious side dish with any Indian dishes like roti, chapati, idli, dosa, upma and even for steamed rice. The juicy ripe tomatoes are cooked along with flavorful spices to thick masala.

Ingredients

  • Tomato – 4 to 5
  • Onion – 2
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard – 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin – 1/2 tsp
  • Split urad dal – 1/2 tsp
  • Chana dal – 1 tsp
  • Garlic – 4
  • Ginger paste – 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric pwd – 1/4 tsp
  • Red chilli pwd – 1 tsp
  • Coriander pwd – 1 & 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin pwd – 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala pwd – 1/2 tsp
  • Saunf pwd – 1/2 tsp
  • Ghee – 1 tsp
  • Sugar (optional ) – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste

Method

  • Wash and slice onion and tomato
  • Heat oil in frypan.
  • Add mustard, cumin, split urad dal and wait to splutter.
  • Add chana dal, curry leaves and saute.
  • Add grated garlic and saute for a minute.
  • Add finely sliced onion, salt and toss until onions are transculent.
  • Add mashed tomato, ginger paste and cook until oil separates.
  • Add turmeric pwd, red chilli pwd, coriander pwd, cumin pwd, hing and saute.
  • Cover & cook for few minutes.
  • Stir once in a while (without adding water), until the masala thickens.
  • Add saunf pwd, sugar 1/2 tsp (optional) and a tsp of ghee.
  • Mix well and turn off flame.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  • Flavorful delicious Thakkali thokku is ready.
  • Transfer to serving bowl.
  • It pairs up great with chapati, roti, poori, idli, dosa or even with steamed rice.
