These are the main things you must do to make the first date successful

Dating can be as difficult or as easy as you make it. As long as you remember the basics and carry them out successfully, you shouldn’t encounter any problems — crucial to remember when meeting someone for the first time! But if you don’t already know the fundamentals, here are some helpful hints and tips to make your first date a triumph.

1. Choose the Right Venue.

When selecting a place to meet your date for the first time, keep in mind that location can say a lot about your character. It’d be wise to choose a pub, restaurant or bar that you know won’t become too crowded or noisy and you can actually hear each other. With summer just around the corner, a park or a beer garden could also be a great way to absorb some rays on a first date.

2. Dress to the Teeth.

Ladies, just as you want your man to take an interest in his appearance, the same goes for us men. If you turn up looking shabby and unkempt, it’ll give a disheartening first impression that may reduce your chances of a second date.

3. Be Punctual.

Arriving on time is key. Of course, there may be extreme circumstances that prevent you from being punctual. (Acceptable excuses include your car breaking down, losing your purse, or being attacked by wild rabbits.) If by some chance you do arrive late, be sure to apologize to your date. And if you can, text him or her first!

4. Mind Your Manners.

Poor manners can ensure you end up alone before the night is through. An overuse of bad language or attempting to speak with a mouth full of half-chewed food gives an awful first impression. Be polite — manners cost nothing but they can go a long way.

5. Listen Before Speaking…

It’s considered rude to interrupt a person in mid-flow, and interrupting your date while they tell you about his or her favorite car or latest adventure is no exception. If your date is speaking, be patient and listen politely. On the other hand, if you feel you can’t get a word in, don’t be afraid to speak up.

6. …But Keep the Conversation Flowing.

Keep the conversation light on a first date and avoid taboo topics like past relationships, politics and religion. Also try not to be too serious; a little humour on a first date can break the ice and prevent tension from building. If you’re stuck for conversation starters ask about your date’s day prior to meeting you. Remember: Your date shouldn’t have to start the discussion every time.

7. And Don’t Forget about Post-Date Communication.

Whoever invented the rule of not being the one to text first after a date must have had very poor communication skills. If you and your date both decide you’re not texting first, how will you stay in touch? Ignore the rule and make the move. You don’t have to sound overeager or too keen, but a simple “thank you for a lovely evening” text can end your date in a positive way, making the chances of a second date more likely. Of course, you should only text if you want to see your date again.
