Tamil Nadu Plays Dirty Politics While Kerala Suffers From Severe Flood

Tamil Nadu’s political stand has caused a delay in opening Mullaperiyar dam and Kerala had to face the consequences.  Kerala had earlier requested that rains are getting heavy in the state and that the Mullaperiyar dam may be opened to reduce the flow of water. But Tamil Nadu held firm that they will think about it when the water level reaches 142 feet.

Tamilnadu’s Intention was to show that even if the water level reaches 142 level, it will be safe. Their ploy to wait until the water level went to 142 feet eventually found success. On Wednesday afternoon, the water level Rose to 142 feet.

There are reports that Kerala Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s request to open the dam wasn’t considered by Palaniswamy and C.M had to call P.M Modi and request him to ask Tamilnadu to comply to Kerala’s requests. Modi has ensured all help for C.M.

There are a total of 13 shutters in Mullaperiyar dam. 10 of those are new and 3 are old. Each of these shutters has been raised by 1.5 meter. Each shutter can be raised up to 16 meters. Until Wednesday about 20508 cusec water has flown into the dam.

As the rate of flow of incoming water increased, it was decided to release 10000 cusec water per second. This may have to be raised to 30000 cusecs soon. It is Tamilnadu who has the control over Mullaperiyar dam.
