Madhav Gadgil Predicts These States to Have Floods Similar to Kerala

Famous environmentalist  Madhav Gadgil has said that a flood similar to Kerala could well occur in Goa and Maharashtra. He said if the instructions given to save western ghats are not implemented effectively, another disaster is on the way. He added that Kerala’s flood is a result of illegal quarries and other illegal constructions detrimental to nature. He felt it is a man-made disaster.

The amount of rainfall in Goa and Kerala is different. But the constructions in the ecologically sensitive areas in these places and other environmental issues existing are very similar to that of Kerala. Although a heavy rain like the one occurred in Kerala may not happen there, landslides and floods like the one in Pune could happen in these states.

He said it is the state governments who have to take the decision based on his report. If democratic powers had taken the initiative to implement the steps in his report, such a big danger wouldn’t have happened in Kerala. He said people should take the initiative to make sure nature isn’t exploited much and that development is happening In an eco friendly way.
