The Government’s chief scientific adviser has not managed out a “digital Christmas” in England due to social limitations that “will need to be in place for a while”.
“The vast majority of the public have been complying and so the policing approach we adopted from the outset will not change. Our officers will continue to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance, and encourage compliance. We will use enforcement as a last resort,” said Assistant chief constable Alan Speirs.
Sir Patrick said, “I think it’s likely that some measures or restrictions are going to need to be in place for a while to try and get those numbers down.” “At the moment, the numbers are heading in the wrong direction, but there’s some signs in some places of a potential flattening off of that, and we need to wait and see and monitor the numbers very very carefully.”
