NDA’s presidential candidate is former governor and tribal leader ‘Droupadi Murmu’

Former Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu has been named as the National Democratic Alliance’s presidential candidate. Earlier in the day, former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha was named the joint Opposition candidate for the upcoming presidential elections.

Following the announcement of the NDA’s presidential candidate, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, ‘Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has committed her life, to helping society and strengthening the underprivileged, disadvantaged, and marginalized.  She has extensive administrative expertise and a distinguished governorship record. I am convinced she will be a great President of our country.’

‘Millions of people, particularly those who have endured poverty and adversity, draw immense strength from Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji’s life. Her policy understanding and sympathetic personality would significantly help our country,’ PM Modi continued.

WHO IS DROUPADI MURMU?
Droupadi Murmu began her political career as a councillor in Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997, rising through the ranks to become a minister in the Odisha government in 2000, and then the Governor of Jharkhand in 2015.

Droupadi Murmu, a two-term Rairangpur MLA, retained her assembly seat in 2009 when the BJD severed relations with the BJP weeks before the state elections, which were won by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Droupadi Murmu also enjoys the distinction of being Jharkhand’s first female governor. Murmu will also be the first president born after independence if elected.
