Shivakumar says, NCERT was forced to replace India with Bharat in books

Karnataka’s deputy chief minister, DK Shivakumar, took a swipe at the Centre on Wednesday after it was reported that a panel of the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) had approved the idea to have the word ‘Bharat’ instead of ‘India’ used in textbooks.

He said that the government ‘forced’ the organisation to make this choice. ‘I think something wrong has happened to this government. Why are they confusing the minds of Indians? The stand they have taken is completely anti-people, anti-India, and anti-Bharat. NCERT has been forced by the NDA government,’ Shivakumar said.

NCERT, however, has not yet officially endorsed the choice. ‘Too premature’ to remark on the news, the panel declared. Furthermore, only one of the 25 panels that examine alterations and revisions to the content of NCERT books has accepted the request.

Shivakumar referred to the decision as ‘wrong’ and declared that Karnataka would stick with the current material.

Why do we refer to the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, and Reserve Bank of India as such? We have the Republic of India on our passports. This is entirely incorrect. He criticised any plans to replace India with Bharat in textbooks by saying, ‘You can’t rewrite India’s history.’

The chairman of the panel that approved the proposal, IC Isaac, said earlier today that the upcoming NCERT book series will be titled ‘Bharat’ rather than ‘India.’ A final decision on the topic is anticipated, however NCERT in Delhi has supported the plan.
