Hurricane Otis hit the beach resort of Mexico’s Acapulco smashing buildings and vital infrastructure

Hurricane Otis made landfall in the beach resort of Acapulco, Mexico early on Wednesday. This storm is one of the most powerful ever to hit Mexico’s Pacific Coast and has caused extensive damage, including severe damage to buildings and crucial infrastructure, leaving the city in a state of disarray and without power.

The destruction caused by the category 5 Hurricane Otis in the southern state of Guerrero is evident from videos and photos shared on social media. It has resulted in widespread devastation, with hotels in ruins, walls and ceilings torn open, windows shattered, and some cars partially submerged in floodwaters.

Footage from Acapulco reveals debris scattered across lobbies, patios, streets, and hotel balconies, with remnants of twisted trees scattered throughout the city’s downtown area. Additionally, downed telecommunication lines and infrastructure damage have cut off the city’s residents from the outside world.

The power outage also forced the city’s airport to close. Moreover, the government has reported significant damage to the airport, including the control tower’s windows being shattered due to the impact of Hurricane Otis.

Although there have been no immediate reports of fatalities, this may be because the power outages have hindered officials’ ability to assess the full extent of the devastation.
