Fatal Wayanad Ghat Road Accident: 1 Dead, 8 Injured as Car Plunges 60 Feet into Gorge

Late Wednesday night, tragedy struck on Wayanad Ghat Road as a car returning from Calicut International Airport plunged 60 feet into a gorge, claiming the life of Rasheeda Shihab, 32, and leaving eight, including children, injured.

Riya, 18, and driver Shyjal, 23, are in critical condition at Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. Others with minor injuries were distributed across Taluk Hospital in Thamarassery and Mist Hills Hospital in Engappuzha, Thamarassery. Locals reported that steel cutters were employed to rescue passengers from the mangled car, hampered by heavy rains and inaccessibility.

Residents also voiced concerns about the absence of signboards and the demolition of protection walls at the accident site, blaming these factors for the tragic incident. Despite challenges, rescue efforts persisted, with injured individuals carried down as road access remained impossible.

As the community mourns, investigations are underway. Thamarassery police confirmed Rasheeda’s body at the Medical College Hospital morgue, to be released to relatives after the noon autopsy. The aftermath underscores the need for safety measures and infrastructure improvements on Wayanad Ghat Road.
