For carrying out 900 ‘illegal abortions’ in three years, Karnataka doctor jailed

Officials said on Monday that the Bengaluru Police had detained a doctor and his lab technician, who were suspected of carrying out almost 900 illegal abortions over the course of the previous three years.

At a hospital in the district capital of Mysuru, Dr. Chandan Ballal and his lab assistant Nisar allegedly charged over Rs 30,000 for each abortion they performed. They claimed that last week, both of them were brought into custody.

Police reported that earlier this month, Meena, the hospital’s manager, and Rizma Khan, the receptionist, were taken into custody.

Last month, while Shivalinge Gowda and Nayan Kumar were driving a pregnant woman to an abortion clinic in the district headquarters town of Mandya, near Mysuru, police arrested them, breaking up the sex-determination and female foeticide racket.

A senior police officer stated that during questioning, the accused pair disclosed the location of a jaggery unit in Mandya that was being used as an ultrasound scan center. From there, a police team subsequently seized the scan machine, which lacked a legal authorization or any official documentation.

‘Preliminary enquiry has revealed that in the last three years, the accused doctor along with his accomplices have managed to perform around 900 illegal abortions at the Mysuru Hospital and charged about Rs 30,000 for each abortion,’ he said.

He said that more research is being done to find more suspects who may have been involved in the racket.
