Michaung Causes Infrastructure Damage in Andhra Pradesh, Weakens to Cyclonic Storm

The severe cyclonic storm Michaung, which made landfall near Bapatla on Tuesday and later weakened to a cyclonic storm, caused significant destruction in Andhra Pradesh. The storm is expected to further subside into a deep depression in the next six hours. The aftermath of Michaung includes damage to 770 kilometers of roads, uprooting 35 trees, and the loss of three livestock. Approximately 40 lakh people from 194 villages and two towns were affected, with 25 villages facing inundation, as per data from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

While there were no reported human casualties on Tuesday, a four-year-old boy died in Tirupati district on Monday when a hut wall collapsed on him. Another person was reported dead in Bapatla district, but authorities clarified that the cause of death was unrelated to the cyclone.

Across the state, 204 relief camps are currently sheltering 15,173 evacuees. Relief efforts include the distribution of 18,073 food packets and over 1 lakh water packets, along with the organization of 80 health camps. The state government has allocated Rs 23 crore for relief efforts in the affected districts. The damage assessment includes 78 huts, a cattle shed, and 232 houses being marooned, with two kuccha houses completely destroyed. The roads and buildings department reports damage to 770 kilometers of surface roads in various districts. Nellore witnessed the highest number of uprooted trees, with 29 out of the total 35 reported in the state.
