A rare cross-border kidney swap transplant save the lives of two mothers

A groundbreaking cross-border kidney swap transplant was successfully conducted in Mumbai, marking the first of its kind in the city. The unique procedure involved two sons, one from Tanzania and the other from India, exchanging kidneys to save the lives of each other’s mothers.

The journey began in September 2023 when 58-year-old Francisca Zacharia from Tanzania sought treatment for stage five chronic kidney disease in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad city. After a series of tests, it became evident that a transplant was crucial for her survival. However, her 32-year-old son, eager to help, faced a compatibility issue with his mother due to differences in blood groups. Seeking a second opinion in Mumbai, the family encountered doctors who suggested a rare solution – a swap kidney transplant.

After extensive discussions, a compatible match was found in Mumbai’s Chembur area, making the transplant a possibility. Simultaneously, another patient, 57-year-old Sheela Chainani, suffering from stage five chronic kidney disease and undergoing dialysis for two years, also struggled to find a suitable match.

β€œIn both cases, they had earlier struggled and faced difficulties in finding a suitable match for the kidney transplant. The procedures were successful, and everyone is recovering slowly,” stated one of the doctors involved.

The unique kidney swap transplant took place on December 4 at Nanavati Hospital, where Francisca received a kidney from Sheela’s son. Simultaneously, at Sushrut Hospital, Sheela underwent surgery with Francisca’s son as her donor.

The success of this rare cross-border kidney swap transplant has not only saved lives but also created a special bond between the two families. The procedure, hailed as the rarest of the rare, showcases the innovative solutions that medical professionals can devise to address complex challenges in organ transplantation.
