Barbie and Oppenheimer expected to lead the newly revamped Golden Globes nominations

Barbie and Oppenheimer, two films that coincidentally shared a release date and were collectively referred to as Barbenheimer, are anticipated to dominate the nominations for the revamped Golden Globes when they are announced.

Barbie, a vibrant and feminist satire on the iconic line of plastic dolls, emerged as the highest-grossing movie of 2023, earning over $1.4 billion globally. It is expected to receive nominations for its stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as well as writer-director Greta Gerwig. Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed drama about the inventor of the nuclear bomb, achieved remarkable success with $950 million at the global box office and is likely to secure nominations for cast members including Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr., along with its director.

The Golden Globes have undergone significant changes in recent years following revelations of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the awards’ voting body, lacking Black members. The HFPA faced criticism for allegations of amateurism and corruption. In response, the HFPA was disbanded earlier this year, and its assets were purchased by private investors. Former HFPA members based in Hollywood have been prohibited from accepting gifts and will now receive salaries for voting. Over 200 non-members have also been added to the Globes’ voting mix.

The announcement of Globes nominees will be made by Cedric The Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama on “CBS Mornings.” CBS has become the new home for the Globes after NBC ended its broadcasting deal. To boost ratings, a new category for “best cinematic or box office achievement” has been introduced, allowing popular films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 to be recognized. The number of nominees in each category has been increased, and household names like Leonardo DiCaprio and Emma Stone are expected to receive nominations. The 81st Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled for January 7 in Beverly Hills.
