Benny Safdie to helm the Dwayne Johnson film on MMA and UFC champion Mark Kerr

Benny Safdie is set to direct the upcoming film titled “The Smashing Machine,” featuring Dwayne Johnson and focusing on the life of MMA and UFC champion Mark Kerr. The film delves into Kerr’s journey during the no-holds-barred era of the UFC in the year 2000, highlighting his struggles with addiction, triumphs, love, and friendship.

Mark Kerr, an American former wrestler and MMA icon, achieved significant success in his career. He was a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and won the World Vale Tudo Championship tournament. Kerr secured over two dozen MMA titles, making him a legendary figure in the sport. In 2003, an HBO documentary titled “The Smashing Machine” explored his life and career.

The film will be produced by Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions, along with Benny Safdie’s Out for the Count banner. Eli Bush and David Koplan are also part of the production team, and A24 has joined as a producer and financier.
