Powerful earthquake hits Japan

Tokyo: An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter Scale jolted Japan’s Kuril Islands on Thursday. Accoding to the  National Centre for Seismology (NCS) , the earthquake occurred at 6.15pm local time at a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre of the earthquake was found to be at latitude of 44.36 and longitude of 149.23

No casualties have been reported as of yet. Further details are awaited.

Japan tops the list of the earthquake prone areas in the world. The island nation witnesses’ regular earthquakes as it is situated on the ‘Pacific Ring of fire’. As per studies, the country reports more than 1500 earthquakes a year. The island nation was devastated by 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. It  caused nuclear plant meltdowns in the country.
