Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom surpasses the lifetime earnings of The Marvels

Following an extended New Year’s weekend, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have made a significant impact on the global box office, surpassing the lifetime earnings of The Marvels. The superhero sequel faced challenges domestically but found success in international territories, particularly in China.

With a global revenue of $258 million, Aquaman 2 has exceeded the $250 million milestone, outperforming The Marvels, which earned $205 million during its entire run. Despite this accomplishment, the film struggled domestically, failing to surpass the $80 million mark in its first 10 days of release. This lackluster debut is among the lowest in the history of the now-defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

Factors such as mixed reviews and numerous alternative entertainment options have likely contributed to the film’s challenges, particularly within the United States. However, the international market, especially China, has proven to be a savior for Aquaman 2, contributing a substantial $173 million to its global earnings.

While the film may not have reached the heights of its predecessor, Aquaman, it has surpassed the lifetime earnings of other recent DC releases, including Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Blue Beetle. These films, like Aquaman 2, faced challenges associated with perceived behind-the-scenes chaos within the DCEU.
