India reports 774 new COVID-19 cases in past 24 hours

India has reported 774 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, with the total number of active cases standing at 4,187, according to the Union Health Ministry. Two deaths, one each from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, were reported in the same period. The daily cases remained in double digits until December 5 but started to rise again due to cold weather conditions and the emergence of the new COVID-19 variant, JN.1. The highest single-day rise since then was 841 cases on December 31, 2023, accounting for 0.2% of the peak cases reported in May 2021.

Of the 4,187 active cases, over 92% are recovering under home isolation. Authorities have noted that the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential rise in new cases or a surge in hospitalization and mortality. India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the peak incidence of daily cases and deaths reported during the Delta wave from April to June 2021. At its height, 4,14,188 cases and 3,915 deaths were reported on May 7, 2021. Since the pandemic began in early 2020, over 4.5 crore people have been infected, and more than 5.3 lakh have died across the country. The recovery rate stands at 98.81%, and 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in India.
