EC decides against CISF deployment in Sitalkuchi, referring to 2021 shooting

In light of the tragic incident during the 2021 assembly polls in Sitalkuchi, Cooch Behar district, where four individuals lost their lives in a firing incident allegedly involving CISF personnel, the Election Commission has taken a significant step. They’ve decided not to deploy any CISF personnel in the area for the upcoming elections. This decision comes after a thorough evaluation of the situation, opting instead for the deployment of BSF, CRPF, or ITBP forces at specific booths.

The incident, which occurred three years ago on April 10, 2021, near booth number 126 of Jorpatki in Sitalkuchi, led to the unfortunate demise of four individuals. Ahead of the upcoming polls, stringent security measures have been implemented to prevent any potential disturbances to law and order on polling day. To ensure a secure environment, a combination of 4,500 state police personnel and 112 companies of central forces will be deployed in Cooch Behar, effectively doubling the force presence compared to other districts set for elections on April 19.

Additionally, similar security arrangements are being made in other districts. In Alipurduar, 2,454 state police officers will work alongside 63 central force companies, while Jalpaiguri will witness the deployment of 75 central force companies along with 3,077 state police personnel. These measures aim to safeguard the electoral process and ensure the safety of voters and election officials across the region.
