PM Modi will open Dhanushkodi road washed away in 1964

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will be in Rameswaram on today will dedicate the former President A P J Abdul Kalam’s memorial to the nation, will also inaugurate the much awaited newly laid Dhanushkodi road that links the abandoned pilgrim town. It was devastated in the 1964 cyclonic storm.

The once flourishing trade centre, Danushkodi was abandoned and it became a ghost town after the cyclonic storm almost destroyed the land strip and wiped out the rail link on the night of December 22, 1964.

He would ‘dedicate to the nation, the missing link of a 9.5-km-long stretch of NH 49 (new NH no 87) from Mukuntharayar Chathiram to Arichamunai’ in the presence of Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao and Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
