VK Sasikala’s review petition in assets case rejected by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court today rejected a request from AIADMK leader Sasikala to review the decision passed against her in the 19-year-old disproportionate assets (DA) case.

Seeking a review of her conviction and jail term, Sasikala’s lawyers told the court that former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who was also an accused in the case, is no more and the Prevention of Corruption Act doesn’t apply to her.

The apex court said it does not find any error in its judgement and therefore does not merit review.

Earlier on February 14, the court had upheld the trial court order in DA case in which three of them were sentenced for four years and fined Rs 10 crore.

Besides Sasikala, two other convicts V N Sudhakaran and Elavarasi, all relatives, had also filed the appeal in the apex court in May.

They are accused of amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 66.65 crore during Jayalalithaa’s first term as chief minister from 1991 to 1996.

The verdict had disqualified Sasikala from becoming a legislator and consequentially she can’t be chief minister either for six years from the date of release of prison under the Representation of the People Act.
