West Bengal Court scraps Mamtha’s curb on Idol immersion

The curb on Durga idol immersion on account of Muharram after 10 pm on Vijay Dashami Day, has been curbed by the Calcutta High Court on Thursday.

Hearing three public interest litigations, Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Rakesh Tiwari and Justice Harish Tandon said that immersion will be allowed on all days as per almanac till 12 o’clock in the night.

The Court asked the police administration to chart out separate route for processions for Durga idol immersion and Muharram. The matter, however, has not been disposed by the Court.

During arguments in the Court Justice Tiwari wanted to know from the counsels representing the State to come up with instances in the past where disturbances had erupted because of Durga Puja immersion and Muharram on the same day.

“If there is nothing in the past and you say I have apprehension or dream that some problem may occur. This will not do,” Justice Tiwari observed.
