Abu Dhabi boy rape-murder case : Accused fit to stand trial, says court

The 33-year-old Pakistani man accused of sexually assaulting and strangling to death an 11-year-old boy is mentally fit and was responsible for his actions during the incident, according to a medical report .

The man is on trial at the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance accused of killing the 11-year-old boy after raping him.

The Pakistani, who happens to be the brother of the victim’s step-mother, allegedly disguised himself in women’s clothes to lure the boy, Athan Janjua, to the rooftop of his building to molest him. When the boy resisted, the man strangled him with a rope, prosecutors said.

The results of a sanity test requested by his defence lawyer showed that the man was sane.

“Yes, I am mentally fit,” said the defendant. “[But] I have been framed by the police and CID, I did not do this.”

Hassan Al Riyami, the defence lawyer appointed by the court, asked for an adjournment to prepare his case, as did prosecutors.

However, the father of the victim, Dr Majed Janjua, told the court that the case is taking too long and it is causing additional emotional damage to the family, as they want justice to be served promptly.

They had previously requested the death sentence for their son’s alleged killer, as opposed to accepting blood money to spare the defendant’s life.

The judge explained to the father that the case has already been filed against the defendant and justice will be served, but procedures need to be followed.

“If we don’t listen to the defendant’s defence, the verdict will be invalid, and definitely bounced back by the cassation court,” said the chief justice.

The case was adjourned until October 24.
