Five-year-old girl falls to death from balcony in Sharjah

A five-year-old girl falls to death from the balcony of her family apartment in a building in Sharjah’s Al Mamzar area.

The police received a call recently during the day about the death of the girl. The operation room immediately dispatched the concerned departments, including the CID, patrol, forensic and ambulance teams who rushed to the site where they found the little girl laying motionless in a pool of blood.

The police shifted the body of the girl to a forensic laboratory for autopsy to determine the cause of her death.

The police interrogated the family members to determine any negligence on part of the parents.

The family described the girl as an active child because of which they were planning to move to a new house as they felt the balcony of their current house was unsafe – but their daughter met with this mishap before they could shift.

The little girl had sneaked into the balcony – despite it being locked – and climbing up the railing while her mother was in the kitchen.

Police and municipality visited the home to investigate the situation of the balcony, which was found shorter than the required safety standards set for children.

An official at Sharjah municipality said last month that the Municipality had held a joint meeting with the Sharjah Council for Urban Planning, the Protection and Safety Authority, Sharjah Police General and Civil Defense to discuss ways to impose regulations and launch awareness among residents on how to prevent children from such accidents.

The move came in accordance with the directives of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, who is keen to maintain the security and safety of all members of society.
