The lesson one should learn from what is happening after the overnight success of the music video of Priya Varrier

Just a 30-second clip and a wink from a Malayalam music video has transformed Priya into an overnight star throughout the world. Priya Prakash Varrier, a Thrissur based model, and actress has been the latest internet sensation of the season. Priya is one of the leading actresses in the upcoming Malayalam film ‘Oru Adaar Love’.

The video that released on February 9 in Youtube soon became quite popular not only among Malayali youth but also among netizens all around the world thanks to Priya. Her smile and naughty wink have captured the minds of millions of youth who started sharing the video on all social networking sites. Even people from other countries were seen keen to know about her whereabouts. It was almost a dream come true moment for Priya.

The song was shot in a school festival background and it features couples exchanging glances and winks. The director has shot it in a romantic way which attracted the audience. The song which is an old Mappila song about Prophet Mohammed and his wife is reused by composer Shan Rahman. In spite of its melodious tone, it was Priya that helped the team to gain more popularity.

From then onwards the internet has been flooded with posts related to Priya. Her Instagram account got more than 6 lakh likes within a single day which is still a dream for celebrities across the world. The number of her followers has exceeded even that of the big names in Malayalam film industry such as Dulquer Salmaan and Mohanlal. Priya currently enjoys more than 32 lakh followers in Instagram and 1.9 crore followers in facebook.

However, the song also gave rise to various controversies. Several Muslim organizations came out against the song claiming that the song is shot in a way that hurts their religious sentiments. They said that the original song was intended to be about Prophet Mohammed and his wife. However, the makers of the film have picturized the song as a romantic number and thereby destroying its soul. Soon this message spread across the social media and many Muslim groups started reacting against it.

In a recent development, a group of Muslim youths have filed a complaint against Priya and music director Shan in Hyderabad. However, the police refused to press the charge against the actress while agreeing to register a case against the director of the film. Now it is up to the court to decide whether the director has hurt religious sentiments or not. Following this, there were reports that director Omar Lulu will be removing the music video from Youtube. However, the director later confirmed that he would not be removing the video as he is receiving great support from people across all sections. According to latest reports, the censor board has also received messages from fringe groups demanding to ban the song.

Meanwhile, Priya, who has become a rage among the youth across the world, might have realized that popularity may not always be constructive. Along with increasing popularity comes increasing negativity. Through this controversy, Priya might have realized this lesson and maybe in the future, she might keep that in mind during further victories.

At the same time, the reaction to the song and Priya’s wink and the controversy that followed is not promising either. It has created a feeling that people, especially the youth, are giving more prominence to films and celebrities rather than concentrating on many serious issues in the society. Whereas the controversy regarding the song hurting religious sentiments is even more alarming given this particular point of time when movies are not seen as they are meant to be but in a much intolerant and critical way. The complaints that the CBFC is receiving are increasing day by day and it is frightening that the freedom of expression is facing a serious threat in the nation.
