It was not too long ago that India and China were involved in some heated exchange of words and serious cross-border tensions and the chances of a dialogue between the leaders of the two countries looked a far cry then. But things have changed as Modi is all set to visit Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province on 27 and 28th of April. Modi will also make another visit on June 9 and 10th to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation(SCO) summit in Qingdao. The current visit of Modi is not entirely unexpected though, the border tensions were diluted by the BRICS summit followed by a number of visits from Indias high-level officials to China. But here are the possible few reasons for why it is happening now.
The Change in World Politics
There has been a change in the perception of the west and Russia is slowly starting to emerge as the top enemy of America. There is every chance that the Chinese relations with America will improve and India may not be a favourite of America anymore. America has always used India as a local enemy against their arch-rivals- China and the situation could change now. It is in India’s interest that we improve ties with our neighbour.
Peace is in everyone’s interest
Even though both countries are quite advanced in their military capabilities, it is in the interest of both parties to maintain peace. Fear of the situation escalating too fast and an imminent war loomed around the country a few months ago and India cannot afford to slide back into that phase again.
Whats in it for CHINA?
China wouldn’t have agreed to a meeting if India was the sole beneficiary of the meeting. The Asian giant will be hoping to earn India’s cooperation in their ambitious Belt and Road Initiative as much as India hopes to gain China’s supposed to be a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
The current relaxed position of both countries will hopefully help them to have a fruitful talk and take good decisions with long-standing benefits for both the nations.
