After the incident he was sentenced to prison but his term was significantly reduced form 3 years to 12 months because of his good behaviour inside the jail. After the sentence, he said he was tortured inside Iraqi jail and he had broken teeth, fractures and several other injuries to show for it. After the release Al Zaidi went to Europe and set up an organisation to help Iraqi war victims. He is standing for election as a candidate for a list founded by Shiite cleric Muqtada Al Saadr. He has promised overall efficiency in Iraq public system, if he wins.

Al zaidi’s protest earned him instant fame at that time and several more protests of same fashion appeared in different parts of the world against many leaders and pictures of Bush and Shoe appeared in many places of Middle east.
