Manual scavenging claims the lives of two daily-wage labourers in the Hyderabad city

The manual scavenging has been claimed the lives of two daily-wage labourers in the city. The victims were asphyxiated to death when they were inside a recently laid water supply pipeline nearby the Uppal cricket stadium here.

The two men were living in the Chilkangar area, Odisha and had flocked to Hyderabad seeking employment. Identified as Santosh and Vijay, the victims were tasked with removing silt and debris from the water pipeline, Sub-Inspector Krishna told. Poisonous gases inside the chamber suffocated them as they entered the pipeline, added the policeman.

While their bodies are being sent to the government-run Gandhi Hospital for the autopsy, the police are yet to register a case in this regard. A police official also confirmed that a case will be lodged and that Hyderabad city police are in the process of collecting all the details and filing a preliminary report.

A probe into the incident has also been ordered by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB). However, it is still not clarified as to who hired the labourers to clean the water pipeline.

Manual scavenging is the practice of employing humans for purposes of cleaning waste and excreta from dry latrines to septic tanks, drains, and sewers. While it is prohibited by law, manual scavenging is widely practised across the country with the maximum number of cases being reported from the state of Tamil Nadu.
