BJP MLA creates controversy by washing BR Ambedkar’s statue

Ignoring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words to his party members; another BJP MLA has created a fresh controversy.

In Uttar Pradesh, a legislator of the ruling party BJP has created a political controversy by washing the statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar with milk, putting a tike on it and draping it with a saffron-coloured shawl.

This action of the MLA has invoked the sharp criticism from BSP leader who demanded that she be booked.

In her defence, the MLA from Tanda Sanju Devi said, “He was a mahapurush… Under Swachch Bharat Mission we are cleaning several areas and decided to clean the area surrounding this statue as well and to pay him respect.”

BSP national general secretary Lalji Verma lashed out at the BJP legislator by saying that if anyone wishes to respect the father of the Indian constitution, they must follow his path. “If someone wants to clean the statue, they can clean the area and garland it. But what she did is against what he had taught or believed… I have spoken to officers in the district and have requested them to lodge an FIR against her,” said Verma who is also an MLA from the same district as Sanju Devi.

While BJP state general secretary Vijay Bahadur Pathak supported his party MLA’s actions by saying that it is wrong to politicise someone paying their respects, this is the second time in two days that a BJP lawmaker has stirred up a controversy.

On Friday, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma invited a storm when he said that Sita, a mythological character from Hindu epic, the Ramayana, was a test tube baby. He was later booked after an advocate filed a case in the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court accusing Sharma of hurting people’s religious sentiments.
