Vested groups giving communal color to Shillong clashes : Meghalaya CM

A 7-hour relaxation was given to the curfew in some pockets of Shillong on Sunday from 8 to 3 for the churchgoers to attend Sunday services. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the violence that happened on Tuesday was a local issue and not a communal one.

After a clash between two communities at Shillong, capital of Meghalaya 10 people were injured following which the Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) leaders from Delhi visited the state. The curfew declared after the clashes have been relaxed by the district authorities of East Khasi Hills from 8 to 3 pm to facilitate church going.

Sangma told the press that it was a local issue though two different communities were involved. He accused the media and some ‘vested’ groups of giving the strife a communal colour. Chief Minister said that some of those who got arrested where outsiders lured by alcohol and cash to create problems.

After maintaining 48 hours of restraint by the Administration and meeting was arranged between leaders of civil societies to check up on the involvement of their members.CM Sangma who chaired a meeting of officials of the home department and Director General of Police SB Singh disencumbered that the administration and the police were on the job to protect every individual.

“I am happy to inform you that the delegation was very happy with the response of the state government to ensure that all citizens are given protection,” said the CM.

According to the news agency PTI, in the 14 localities under the jurisdictions of the Lumdiengjri police station the curfew was declared and at 3 PM, the Cantonment police beat house was resumed.

An official said that the night curfew in the entire city from 10 PM – 5 AM will continue and the suspension of the internet and messaging services will also be carried on.
