In Kerala Assembly, an MLA enters wearing mask and gloves; Nipah Fear;Ruling front in defense

MLA Parakkal Abdulla of Indian Union Muslim League(IUML) from Kuttiyadi-Perambra constituency which is the epicentre of Nipah, entered the Kerala Assembly on Monday wearing gloves and mask. This unique way of protest to bring the Government’s serious attention to his constituency anyway sparked a war of words between ruling LDF and the opposition UDF.

Parakkal Abdulla walked into the assembly wearing mask and gloves and greeted his colleagues. To this incident, CM Pinarayi Vijayan made an accusation that the member was trying to trivialize the issue. Health Minister lambasted the act as ‘ridiculous’.

The state of Kerala is apprehensive due to the Nipah fear and also the Government’s instruction was to be vigilant.CM Pinarayi Vijayan said that the Government of Kerala had taken all the necessary steps of prevention since the confirmation of Nipah and that the Health Department’s intervention was efficient. He criticized Abdulla for making a self-ridiculing act.

Health Minister ‘clinically’ attacked him when she pointed out that there were certain ways of wearing a mask and that if the MLA was infected he should not come to the house.

Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala gave full support to the MLA and said that as every person in his constituency was in that attire, he also portrayed about it symbolically.

Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan made an enquiry to the member why he wore that mask.

About 17 people have lost their lives already due to Nipah virus in the districts of Kozhikode and Malappuram, since the confirmation of the deadly virus in the state of Kerala on May 17.
